Rough Translation

New Episodes Returning Summer 2018

Rough Translation by NPR

NPR’s international podcast where cultures collide and the phrasebook fails.

Rough Translation debuted in 2017 and sat in top rankings–at some weeks as the #2 spot–on the iTunes Top Podcast chart. NPR’s award-winning podcast presents perspective-shifting stories from abroad featuring stories from correspondents in NPR’s 17 international bureaus around the world.

Audiences are curious to know how things we’re talking about at home are being talked about somewhere else in the world. From a Ukrainian battlefield to a Somali prison cell, an Indian yoga studio and a Syrian refugee’s first date, host Gregory Warner tells stories that follow familiar conversations into unfamiliar territory.

At a time when the world seems small but it’s as hard as ever to escape our echo chambers,

Rough Translation takes you places.

Rave Reviews

"By traveling from country to country to tackle topics hugely important to life in America—race, fake news, dating—listeners get a broader context for their own hangups, prejudices, and social mores."

The Atlantic

“This is different. This is sly. This show tells you that when reporters travel to new and distant places, they bring their old eyes, their old ears, and sometimes they miss what’s smack dab in front of them. Rough Translation is funny, smart and -- most of all -- an eye opener. (Make that ear-opener.)”

Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich, Hosts of Radiolab

"With Warner as guide, Rough Translation aims to take listeners around the world while keeping one foot planted firmly on familiar ground."

Poynter

"Rough Translation [...] thoroughly answers the age-old post-trip question by examining the meaning of ideas like race, love and "fake news" in places other than America. And by taking listeners out of their bubbles and into countries thousands of miles away."
