July 2026

Audio fans have turned to NPR for trusted, reliable content for over 50 years. NPR’s high-quality journalism does more than inform for the public good – it also provides a competitive advantage over commercial media for sponsors. The results from the 2026 State of NPR Sponsorship Survey revealed record-high positive perceptions for NPR content and sponsor messages, demonstrating a clear correlation between sponsoring NPR content and enhanced brand credibility, and a halo effect that translates to listeners taking action.

Key halo attributes reach all-time highs in 2026

For radio listeners, key NPR halo metrics have reached their highest scores in over 15 years. Over three-quarters of radio listeners now agree that NPR sponsorship improves their opinion of a brand, and they prefer to purchase from companies that support NPR.

Among NPR radio listeners:

79%

agree their opinion of a business is more positive after finding out they sponsor NPR

77%

agree they prefer to purchase from brands that sponsor NPR when price & quality are equal

Among NPR podcast listeners:

74%

agree they prefer to purchase from brands that sponsor NPR when price & quality are equal

77%

agree NPR is selective about the brands that sponsor its programming

For podcasts, listener preference for sponsors and perceived selectivity have both reached their highest levels since tracking began in 2015. Across platforms, most listeners agree that NPR sponsorship improves their opinion of brands, makes them more likely to purchase, and shows that NPR is selective about the products and services it promotes.

Enhanced Brand Credibility and Shared Values

Listeners perceive NPR sponsors as credible, trustworthy, and socially responsible, with scores for these key attributes outpacing commercial media. 72% of NPR podcast/radio users agree that the businesses they hear sponsoring NPR are more credible than those on commercial programming. An NPR sponsorship signals to audiences that a brand values objective journalism, respects the listeners’ intelligence, and cares about public welfare and local communities.

"NPR sponsors appear credible and thoughtful, suggesting that the companies value quality journalism and connecting with an audience interested in meaningful and informative content."
