The star-studded Mercy Street cast gives viewers yet another reason for tuning in Sunday evenings. Arresting dialogue, vivid scenes and elaborate hoop skirts abound in PBS’s newest drama. Gone With the Wind fans, rejoice.
Mercy Street goes beyond the front lines of the Civil War. Ridley Scott’s (The Martian, Thelma and Louise, Blade Runner) production follows characters at Mansion House Hospital in Union-occupied Alexandria, Virginia. Memoirs and letters from real doctors and nurse volunteers at the hospital inspired the series.
The Mercy Street cast intrigues and educates viewers all at once. Gary Cole (Veep, Archer), Josh Radnor (How I Met Your Mother), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (The Returned), AnnaSophia Robb (The Carrie Diaries), Jack Falahee (How to Get Away with Murder) and Hannah James (Winding Lane) are just a few actors transformed into 19th Century personas.
Radnor plays a doctor treating patients within Mansion House Hospital, owned by local businessman James Green (Cole). Green’s daughters, Alice and Emma (Robb and James), learn to live with wounded soldiers. They must also adjust to newcomers like Mary (Winstead), an abolitionist nurse from the North.
PBS says writers and producers collaborated with historians and medical experts when creating the show. They include James M. McPherson (Battle Cry Of Freedom: The Civil War Era), Dr. Stanley Burns (medical advisor to the HBO/Cinemax series The Knick) and Jane Schultz (Women At The Front: Hospital Workers In Civil War America).
Mercy Street is PBS’s first original American drama in more than a decade. Downton Abbey and Call the Midwife fans will enjoy the series, finding solace in exciting drama amplified by the Mercy Street cast.
